NORWICH – The Norwich Girls Swimming and Diving Team started the 2022 season with a 76-64 win over the Greene Trojans Tuesday evening. Coach Saundra Gantt was impressed with the first meet of the season, even with only 2/3 of the team (six girls). But, there are a few improvements to be made in the little time before their next meet this weekend.

Nina Kman kicked off her sophomore season with victories in the 200 yard individual medley (2:26.89) and in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:25.95). Mikayla Sastri earned a win in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:23.88 while teammate Aurora Shtrauch finished first in the 100 yard backstroke (1:17.03).

Julia Llewellyn achieved victories in the 500 yard freestyle event (7:10.58) and in the the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 30.19 seconds. To round out the individual events, Meghan Funk received six points in the 100 yard freestyle (1:10.19) as Regan Finnegan finished first in the 200 yard freestyle (2:31.18).

In the team relay events, Shtrauch, Funk, Llewellyn, and Sastri earned the victory in the 200 yard medley with a time of 2:16.26. A team of Finnegan, Funk, Sastri, and Kman led the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 2:00:06 in the finals. Norwich struggled in the 400 freestyle relay and did not qualify.

Coach Gantt said that relays is one thing the team needs to improve on before their next meet.

“We had a really good first meet,” Gantt said. “Relays need some work but we have little time. We are looking forward to the Waverly Invitational this weekend.”
