NORWICH — With chillier temperatures on their way, Chenango County residents can prepare for the winter season by learning to crochet their own hat and mittens at two crochet classes hosted by the Chenango Arts Council in Norwich.

The classes are taught by local crafter Pat Horton, who also teaches crochet workshops at Guernsey Memorial Library throughout the year. At 6 p.m. on Thursday, October 6 in the Chenango Arts Council Gallery, Horton will be teaching novice and skilled crocheters alike how to craft their own winter hat.

The following week at 6 p.m. on Thursday, October 13, Horton will then teach crocheters how to make a pair of warm winter mittens.

Classes are $15 per person, per session, and all supplies and light refreshments will be provided. To register, visit ChenangoArts.org, or call the Chenango Arts Council at 607-336-2787.

Chenango Arts Council Administrative Assistant Mary Beth Miller said this won't be the last crochet class, either. But for those looking to learn a different artistic skill, the Chenango Arts Council also offers classes and workshops covering a wide range of art.

"We’ve gotten some requests for [crochet classes] so I’m sure we’ll see more in the future, especially in the winter," said Miller. "We do painting classes, we’re going to have some more of those. We do ceramics classes. Last December we did a stained glass class, drawing, all kinds of things. We’ve done poetry and creative writing classes, there’s a wide variety."

"We’re going to have a Halloween painting class, and we’re going to have details about that very soon," she added. "We’re going to have different drawing and painting classes as we go along, so stay tuned and we’ll have more classes available soon."

The Chenango Arts Council's 2022-23 season kicks off in just a few weeks with a performance of Agatha Christie's iconic whodunnit mystery "The Moustrap," put on by the Norwich Theater Company on October 8.

Following the play will be a three-week series of spooky Halloween movies, held in the Chenango Arts Council Martin W. Kappel Theater.

"In October we’re also going to have three Halloween movies. We’re going to partner with Guernsey Library," said Miller. "It’s going to be 'The Son of Frankenstein,' 'One Body Too Many,' which is kind of a comedy with Jack Haley from 'The Wizard of Oz,' and actually Bella Legosi is in that, too. And then the third movie is Lon Cheney Jr.’s 'The Wolfman.'"

Screenings will take place at 7 p.m. on October 12, 19, and 26. All movies are free to attend and complimentary popcorn will be provided. Pre-registration is not needed.

Leading into November will be a showing of "Film and Strings: Robin Hood." The three-piece string group Opus Black will perform a live score alongside a screening of the Douglas Fairbanks silent film "Robin Hood," on Saturday, November 5.
