OXFORD – The Oxford Blackhawks girls soccer team suffered a heart-breaking 2-1 loss to Charlotte Valley in overtime. Tuesday’s game started the first round of sectionals. Oxford was a fifth seed while Charlotte Valley was a 12th seed in terms of points each team earned in seasonal match-ups.
Both teams battled in the first half with the Blackhawks taking some hard shots on goal that were saved by Cadence Santiago. Brooke Huggins could’ve easily netted one but Santiago made a crucial save on the right side.
While the Blackhawks had great chances, they went into halftime down 1-0. Charlotte Valley’s Natalie Amadon scored off a pass from Jessica Zuill on a rebounded ball with a minute left.
In the second half, Oxford made sure to keep fighting and was able to tie the game up on a corner kick. Hailey Fleury found Kayla Figary who put it past Santiago on the left side.
After being tied at 1 at the end of regulation, both teams played a 15 minute sudden death that could have gone into a double overtime, but Charlotte Valley’s Cadence Losie scored the game-winner on a drive following a corner kick.
While this was a tough loss, the Blackhawks are proud for a great season and will be back in action next year.
