OXFORD – For the Oxford Blackhawks boys soccer team, 2022 did not come easily, but the season was a valued learning experience for upcoming players heading into varsity.
As a young team, 12 out of 15 players on the roster this season were underclassmen, including the Blackhawks’ starting goalkeeper Kayden Renfrow, who proved himself as a freshman. In goal, Renfrow made an impressive 176 saves this season, which earned him the most valuable player award.
The Blackhawks, who finished 3-12-1, faced a tough league this season, where they saw 11 of 16 opponents make sectional play. While trying not to get too discouraged, they appreciated the experience.
“ We are building a culture within our program that will not back down and will continue to get better,” head coach Corey Endress said. “As a team we grew but that is not without acknowledging individuals who stood out all season.”
Jerry Hornbeck was the team’s leading goal scorer, even with missing the last six games due to injury. Hornbeck and senior John Rovente were tied for the team lead in assists.
With John Rovente being the team’s lone senior, the Blackhawks understand they will remain a young team next season, but with players who now have experience.
“We will miss John’s leadership and toughness next year,” Endress said. “He has been a consistent player to our young inconsistent team for the past two years. We are excited moving forward with a solid core of young players who are eager to play this offseason and will only continue to get better.”
Following the conclusion of the season, the Blackhawks handed out team awards and honored athletes who made MAC all-stars.
