OXFORD — Folk/acoustic venue 6 On The Square in Oxford continues its 16th season with a special Christmas show when Nova Scotian sister duo Cassie and Maggie MacDonald return at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 4.
The internationally acclaimed, award-winning MacDonald sisters have appeared on stages across North America, the U.K. and Europe with their unique blend of traditional and contemporary Celtic instrumentals and vocals. Their performances feature fiddle, piano, and guitar arrangements as well as sibling vocal harmonies in both English and Gaelic, all complemented by their percussive step-dancing style.
The duo recently released their first full-length holiday album, “A Very Very Cassie and Maggie Christmas,” which includes classic Christmas hymns, ancient carols, and a sassy ode to the most mysterious of Santa’s reindeer, Vixen.
The album reflects their place in a multi-generational musical dynasty where Christmas was always a time to gather and sing boisterously, as in days of old. The doors were always open to company, and the new year was just around the corner.
Tickets for the Dec. 4 show are $20 (plus a $2 service charge); purchase at 6onthesquare.org or call 607-843-OTS6 (6876) to make a reservation. Doors open one hour before the start of the performance. The performance also will be streamed live online on a pay-what-you-can basis; more information at 6onthesquare.org.
Masks and COVID-19 vaccinations are strongly encouraged but not required for entry.
This concert is made possible in part by Wells Fargo Advisors, Mirabito, Chenango County Tourism, and with public funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Gov. Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature, and administered by the Earlville Opera House.
Coming up are the Burns Sisters on Dec. 18, Nate Gross on Jan. 28, a PEO fundraiser with Meghan Cary on Feb. 11, and The Tannahill Weavers on Feb. 18.
