NEW BERLIN – Most varsity basketball games of this year’s Unadilla Valley Holiday Basketball Tournament will be broadcast live over the internet.
The boys’ tournament will include teams from Unadilla Valley, Norwich, Sherburne-Earlville, and Greene high schools. The girls’ competition features UV, S-E, Greene and Windsor. Varsity games involving UV, Norwich, and S-E will be aired live.
Veteran local sportscaster Harry Graves will be joined by Caleb Hatton and Skylar Wenzel to provide the play-by-play. The project is part of continuing coverage of high school basketball being offered on Mixlr.com with underwriting support from several area businesses.
Listeners can follow their favorite team by going to Mixlr.com on any computer, tablet, or smartphone, then putting “Chenango Sports” in the search area. This will bring up a sports page featuring several groups providing similar sports coverage. Click on the logo for “Chenango Sports” to hear games involving northern Chenango County teams.
The scheduled start time for each game is approximate. The actual start of each tournament game will depend on the progress of the preceding game but is usually within 10-15 minutes of the posted time.
The Chenango Sports page lists all upcoming events to be aired. It also has an archive of all past games to be listened to again or to be downloaded.
“When the local radio station stopped airing sports events some years ago, a group of boosters opted to start offering football and basketball play-by-play over the internet,” explained Graves. “We soon had a loyal Norwich audience and this year expanded to include both S-E and UV.”
“With the internet, we reach far beyond the old radio signal,” Graves added. “Grandparents have been able to follow the teams from their winter homes and recent grads can tune in from their colleges. We’ve even had reports of fans listening while driving down a distant interstate.”
The Unadilla Valley Holiday Tournament features junior varsity games on Tuesday. Varsity competition starts on Wednesday afternoon, December 28 involving both the boys’ and girls’ squads.
Wednesday games to be aired feature Norwich playing Greene at 3 PM. The S-E ladies will play Unadilla Valley at approximately 4:30 with the S-E boys meeting the UV Storm in the 6 P.M. game.
The consolation and championship contests are set for Thursday afternoon and evening. All varsity games involving Norwich, S-E, and UV will be aired on Mixlr.com.
