SARATOGA - On Saturday, the Norwich Purple Tornado wrestling team brought five strong wrestlers to the Saratoga Invitational, where the team finished 11th. Two of the five made it to the finals while Robert McIntyre came in fifth place in the 285 weight class. Robert went 4-1 on the day, including three straight wins after losing the second match. He is currently 7-7 in his final season.
Maverick Beckwith and Yanni Drapaniotis were the two finalists. In the 102 weight class, Beckwith made it to the finals with three impressive wins, including a pin vs Canajoharie-Fort Plain’s Chloe Haig in the first 58 seconds before two tough matches that still resulted in wins. He lost a heart-breaking finals match in a close 4-3 decision to Vincent Graulau from Mohonasen. As only an eighth grader, Beckwith is 17-4 on the season.
Freshman Yanni Drapaniotits also finished second in his respective 152 weight class. He won on two close decisions before reaching the finals, where he was pinned in the first 54 seconds by Whitehall’s Sawyer Ostrander.
Aside from these top finishers, Norwich also had Braden Reid and Regan Roach compete. Both wrestlers picked up wins, but fell in the quarter finals.
Norwich will return home on Thursday against Oneonta to celebrate seniors Robert McIntyre, Mason Edwards, and Nate Murphy. The match will be held at 6:30 p.m.
