CORTLAND – All local indoor track teams were back in action over the weekend for the Winter Classic held at SUNY Cortland, where they’ve spent the majority of the 2022-2023 season.
The Norwich Purple Tornado teams competed in the 9 a.m. session while Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton/Harpursville, Unadilla Valley, and Oxford teams waited until 2 p.m.
NORWICH:
The Norwich boys finished in third place with 55 points, behind Vestal (67) and Horseheads (60). As a team, Norwich earned first place in the distance medley relay. Richard Fuller, Caden Sutton, Zander Sutton and Drew Brooks helped achieved this victory with a time of 12:08.37. Each of the four also had notable individual performances.
For Fuller, he came out victorious in the 300 meter dash with a time of 37.76 with teammate Gabe Decker finishing fifth. Fuller also finished second in the 55 meter dash.
Caden Sutton had a first place finish in the 1000 meter run event, achieving a time of 2:54.05 while his brother Nic Sutton came in 11th. Nic also finished 11th in the 1600 meter run while Zander Sutton finished ninth in the 600 meter run.
Drew Brooks rounded out the runners with a third place finish in the 3200 meter run with a time of 10:31.38.
In the high jump, Gage Titsworth came in fourth place with a jump of five feet, four inches. Harrison Matlack-Grey earned fourth in the shot put (37-03) with Drew Westervelt coming in sixth (34-5).
The Norwich girls finished the day with a ninth place finish as Oneonta held the top spot.
Ava Cirigliano continues to strive for the Purple Tornado as she picked up a third place finish in the 300 meter dash with a time of 46.57. She achieved 11th place in the 55 meter dash with teammate Layla Root finishing 16th in both events.
Sophomore Annie Boland earned sixth place in the 1500 meter run as Brinley Beckwith finished ninth in the 55 meter hurdles before coming in 10th in the high jump.
Boland, along with Kyra Brunick-Davis, Emilia Pepe, and Hayley Slack, took fifth place in the distance medley relay.
Lena Neisler and Lara Tefft continue to impress in their respective fielding events. Neisler came in third place in the high jump with a jump of four feet, eight inches while Tefft earned third in the shot put event with a mark of 28-10.50. Nestler’s jump of 4-8 has tied NHS’ school record.
BGAH:
The Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton/Harpursville girls finished in fourth place, behind Unadilla Valley, with 47 points as the boys came in eighth place with only eight points. Ithaca dominated all scoring for both the boys and girls.
Both BGAH’s track teams succeeded in the weight throw event as each team took the first and second positions respectively. For the boys, Connor Vredenburgh and Anthony Pfaff finished on top while Chandler Benjamin and Lila Lee took first and second for the girls.
Other significant performances for the girls include Ethne Degan coming away with a first place victory in the 1000 meter run, achieving a new personal-best time of 3:05.23, which made the NY Top 50 list.
Riley Lindsay also had a great day with picking up a first place finish in the shot-put event with a throw of 30 feet, 1 3/4 inches. She also finished 10th in the weight-throw with a throw of 351.25 meters. Teammate Maddie Ingham earned a second place finish in the 1500 meter run, collecting eight team points.
Other than the high remarks in the boys weight-throw, Julian Pruskowski came away with a second place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 39-3.50. Connor Borowski finished 11th in the 55 meter hurdles.
UV:
The Unadilla Valley Storm girls track team had a successful meet with a third place finish in the meet while the boys finished 12th with three points.
The girls dominated as a team in the sprint medley relay featuring Gracie Gorrell, Kalie Naughton, Isabella Potter, and Lyla Taylor. They picked up a second place finish with a time of 4:39.68 behind Ithaca’s 4:38.47.
Gracie achieved a new personal-best time in the 300 meter dash as she finished first in 43.50 seconds. She also finished fifth in the long jump with a jump of 14 feet, 11 3/4 inches.
Junior Jaiden Schrag continues to add to her school-record in the 55 meter hurdles as she excelled with a new best of 9.34 seconds, good enough for second place behind Dryden’s Carlea Davis. Schrag also finished behind Davis in the long jump.
Kalie Naughton came away with a fifth place finish in the 55 meter dash with a new best of 8.07 seconds while Lyla Taylor achieved a new best time of 1:58.41 with a fourth place finish in the 600 meter run. Naughton also accomplished a new personal-best in the shot-put with a throw of 26 feet, eight inches, best for third place.
Leading the Storm on the boys side was Haywood Edwards with a sixth place finish in the 55 meter hurdles, which he finished in 9.93 seconds. He also finished eighth in the triple jump with a jump of 34 feet, 9 1/4 inches. Lucas Donato finished fifth in the boys weight-throw with a throw of 306.25 meters.
OXFORD:
The Oxford Lady Blackhawks finished 10th with seven points as the boys came in 11th place with five points.
Kayla Figary continues to power through for the female runners with a third place finish in the 55 meter dash before earning sixth in the 300 meter dash and 11th in the long jump (12-3).
The Oxford boys achieved a fifth place finish as a team in the sprint distance relay. Jack Figary, Killian Pohl, Victor Richette, and Gordon Smith finished with a time of 4:19.84.
Richette continues to pave the way for the Blackhawks male runners as he came in sixth place in the 300 meter dash and picked up a 13th place finish in the 55 meter dash. Nicholas Richette earned an 11th place finish in the long jump with a jump of 16 feet, 5 3/4 inches.
Gordon Smith achieved a fifth place finish in the 1600 meter run, which he ran in a personal-best time of 5:16.00.

All local teams are expected to compete in the Quinney Invite at Ithaca College and it looks like all teams will compete against each other in the 5 p.m. session.
