NEW BERLIN – On January 18 the New Berlin Library and 4H/Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chenango County held an After School Program. 4H Educator, Erica Clark, lead the lesson that was entitled “Recycle and Reuse."
The children learned about different types of plastics. They learned that were seven different plastic codes and how to identify the plastic based on the codes printed on them. They learned which plastics are accepted at recycling centers. Only Type 1 Polyethylene Terephthalate (PETE), Type 2 High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE), and Type5 Polypropylene (PP) are accepted in Chenango County. They then sorted through various clean recyclable containers to determine which were able to be recycled.
The final part of the program was a brainstorming session to come up with ideas about how to reuse plastic containers. The participating children then did a craft project consisting of turning water bottles into either piggy banks and pencil holders. The children were given various “funny” pencils to fill their pencil holders.
The after school programs takes place from 3:30-4:30 on the third Wednesday of the month in the New Berlin Library Community Room. The next scheduled program is February 15.
