DELHI – The Oxford Lady Blackhawks are cruising right along in the Section IV, Class D tournament with wins against GMU, South Kortright, and now Southern Cayuga. Oxford defeated Southern Cayuga 47-34 on Wednesday at SUNY Delhi. Standing tall at 19-5, the Blackhawks head to the sectional championship game, the top and remaining playoff basketball team in Chenango County.
The first half looked like a defensive battle with a low scoring game on offense. Oxford took the 15-10 advantage at halftime with Southern Cayuga in serious foul trouble. The foul trouble would continue into the second half, leaving Oxford with a total of 32 foul shots. They made 17 to go 53 percent at the free-throw line. 14 free-throws were made by leading scorer Madalyn Barrows.
Barrows led the Blackhawks with 24 points and collected 18 rebounds, including 13 defensive. Oxford out-rebounded their opponent in a close 48-42 margin. Kyla Kelsey-Jones finished behind Barrows with 12 points. There was not a lot of the whole team contribution that Oxford has been used to seeing throughout the season, but they were grateful to pick up the win.
Oxford will face top seeded Cherry Valley-Springfield in Saturday’s championship gam, potentially at 2 p.m. Please check for any updates through the Oxford Academy social media platforms.
CV-S has made their presence known in the local area after they had a tough non-league game against STAC opponent Norwich. CV-S finished on top of the Tri-Valley league at 22-1 and won the championship over Laurens. Both teams will return to SUNY Delhi with admission being charged through GOFan Digital Ticketing.
