AFTON – The Unadilla Valley Storm softball team kicked off its 2023 season on the road against Afton on Monday. The Storm scored in every inning to take a 21-3 victory. UV’s offense went to work, providing 21 runs on 14 hits throughout the five innings played.

UV got on the board early in the first off an RBI single by Pyper Kneale and never looked back. They went on to score four runs in the inning before scoring a game-high of eight runs in the fourth.

The eight runs were tacked on due to tremendous at-bats from core players in the lineup with a few mishaps by Afton. Ava Rowe and Jaiden Schrag started the inning off with walks before Kailee Figger notched a single.

Figger, Kneale, Bella Jones, and Shelby Rose all contributed with multiple hits throughout the game. Kneale led the team with three hits in three at-bats while also stealing three of the team’s 20 stolen bases in the win.

Haleigh Fisher earned the victory on the mound for the Storm. She pitched all five innings, allowing three runs on two hits, no walks, and struck out 15 batters. Afton’s Jenna Wilson took the loss and struck out six batters.

Both teams are right back to work as UV heads out to Bainbridge this afternoon and Afton travels to Unatego. Both games are expected to start at 4:30 p.m.
