CHENANGO VALLEY – After hosting the first meet of the season last Tuesday, the Norwich Purple Tornado track team competed in Chenango Valley. This meet helped Norwich prepare for the Quinney Invitational coming up on Saturday in Sidney.
The Norwich boys scored 74 points against the Warriors 65. Norwich won all relay events (3200,400,1600) while individuals strived in their respective events.
Gage Titsworth picked up a victory in the 110 meter hurdles before placing third in the 400 meter hurdles behind teammate Gabe Decker, who came in second. Connor Marshall also competed in the 110 meter hurdles, which he ran in 24.4 seconds for third place.
Caden Sutton earned two top finishes on the day. He ran the 1600 meters in 5:12 and ran the 800 meters in 2:16.8 to win both events. Nico Sutton came in second for the 1600 while James Ferracane achieved second for Norwich in the 800 meters.
Holden Ryan finished first overall in the 100 meter dash that he ran in 11.1 seconds. Yanni Drapaniotis rounded out the sprinters with a third place finish in the 400 meters, clocking in at 1:05, three seconds behind the leader.
For field events, Anthony Ragonese jumped 18 feet, 6 3/4 inches to lead Norwich in the long jump while teammate Jerell Stokes came in second (16’ 71/2’’). Stokes also came in first place in the triple jump with a jump of 37 feet, 10 1/2 inches.
Aleks Smietana earned the victory in the discus with a throw of 134 feet, six inches as Gabe Blenis came in third (122’10’’). Smietana also finished third in the shot put event (38-4.5).
The Norwich girls had a strong performance against Chenango Valley. Brynley Ryan achieved a first place finish in the 100 meter dash and tied with teammate Layla Root for second in the 200 meter dash. Both Ryan and Root ran a time of 15.1 seconds. Hayley Slack (first) and Olivia Doliver placed in the top two positions for the 400 meter dash as Kyra Brunick-Davis earned the victory in the 1500 meter. Emilia Pepe finished second in the same 1500 event with a time of 7:00.7.
Brunick-Davis also competed in the 800 meters, where she came in second place with a time of 3:17.6, behind CV’s 3:09.1. Brinley Beckwith earned two third place finishes in the 100 hurdles and in the 400 hurdles to round out the sprinters.
Norwich and Chenango Valley split both team relay events with Norwich winning the 400 and CV taking the 3200.
In the field events, Eva Blenis earned the top finish in the discus with a throw of 75 feet, eight inches. Emma Urgo finished second in both the long jump (11-4.75) and in the triple jump (25-4.25). Hayley Slack competed in the long jump and finished behind Urgo with a jump of 11 feet, four and a half inches. Lara Tefft came in second in the shot put with a throw of 28-7.5.
Norwich will be at Sidney along with several other local teams for the Quinney Invitational on Saturday, starting at 10 a.m.
