GREENE – The Greene Trojans softball team was back on their home field on Tuesday against Harpursville. Greene trailed 3-0 in the first inning, but made a fearless comeback to win 17-4.
Greene tied the game in the third inning off Payton Yahner’s two-run double before holding Harpursville to set up a big fourth inning.
With two outs, Greene’s bats fired up at the perfect time. The Trojans also got runners on base with walks before a big missed pop-up, that could’ve ended the inning, plated two runs. Abby Yahner drove in two runs on a long single before Rhea Malmquist, in her second time up, sent two runners home on an extra base hit.
Greene was up by 13 runs as they tacked on five more runs in the fifth inning, but fell just shy of ending the game, as they needed to be up 15 runs. However, Payton Yahner and the Greene Trojans defense stood their ground to only allowed Harpursville to score one final time.
Yahner earned the win on the mound, allowing four runs on six hits, only walked one batter, and struck out 12. The defense only committed one error in the sixth inning.
Greene (7-2) heads to Unatego on Thursday for a game at 4:30 p.m.
