GREENE – Coming off big wins against Harpursville and Unatego, the Greene Trojans softball team hosted Walton for senior night on Tuesday. Greene’s bats heated up early to lead them to a 16-0 victory in five innings.
Prior to the start of the game, Greene honored its two dedicated seniors McKenzie Scott and Payton Yahner. The two astonishing ladies make a fearless pair as a pitcher-catcher duo. Both have big dreams ahead of them and will be attending college in the fall.
Scott and Yahner also had a big day at the plate. Scott, the team’s hard-working lead-off batter, reached base four times and scored four runs. She hit doubles in the first and third innings and a triple in the second. She was walked her last time up, limiting any other damage by her hot bat.
Scott also scored two runs driven in by fellow senior Yahner. Yahner had two big hits and reached base four times as well as off two errors by the defense. She hit a two-run home run in the second inning before hitting a long two-run single in the Trojans’ big fourth inning.
Nadia Brown (two), Kenzie Button, Lexi Cloyd, Audra Doll, Claire Flanagan, and Cali Knapp also provided at least one hit for the offense. Brown, Knapp, and Dakota LeBlanc each drove in a run in the shut out victory.
Payton was dominant on the mound as well. She pitched a no-hitter and didn’t allow a single base runner in the contest. She also struck out 12 batters and the defense put away the remaining players on two ground outs and an infield pop-up. When the last out came, Yahner quickly rushed off the mound to hug her mother, Tanya, Greene’s assistant coach.
Greene stands tall in second place of the MAC with a 9-2 record behind Deposit-Hancock (12-1) and travels to Elmira this afternoon for a non-league game scheduled at 5 p.m.
