NORWICH - On Thursday afternoon at approximately 4:30 p.m. the Norwich and Sidney police concluded an investigation into a fugitive hiding in the City of Norwich following a brief standoff.

Thomas J. Wright, 36, homeless, was wanted on multiple court warrants and arrested after police said he attempted to barricade himself inside a Henry Street apartment.

Wright is facing charges of second degree criminal contempt, resisting arrest, tampering with physical evidence, seventh degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, third degree burglary, and second and and third degree grand larceny.

“On May 4th, Norwich PD received information that Thomas Wright was hiding in an apartment at 46 Henry Street in the City of Norwich. Norwich Police Officers responded to 46 Henry Street and after a brief and tense stand-off, they were able to make their way into the residence, where Thomas had barricaded himself in the closet,” reported City of Norwich Police Chief Reuben Roach.

Norwich police officers used verbal de-escalation and were able to get Thomas to surrender himself.

“These situations can be very tense, and I am thankful that my officers used their training in de-escalation to resolve this situation, without anyone getting injured,” said Roach.

Thomas was turned over to the custody of the Sidney Police Department and will appear in Sidney Village Court at a future date.

The NPD reported an investigation was continuing and additional charges would likely also be filed in the City of Norwich Court.
