SIDNEY— On Saturday, the Bainbridge-Guilford Bobcats and the Norwich Purple Tornado softball teams participated in the SFCU tournament held at Sidney high school. Bainbridge-Guilford won the tournament by winning both games while Norwich lost both games they played.
The Bobcats defeated Norwich 12-1 in the first game and won 7-5 against Sidney in the championship game. Norwich lost to Seton Catholic 12-3 in their second game of the tournament.
In the Norwich-B-G game, the Bobcats put up a four-run third inning as a run came home on an error during Tori Suda’s at-bat while J. Henderson doubled, sending home a pair. Celeste Baldwin, who led the team with four RBIs, drove in a run with a ground-out.
Norwich scored its lone run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly out. Maddy Quattrocchi had the only hit for the Purple Tornado in the loss. She also struck out five batters on the mound and made the all-tournament team.
Gabriella Cuozzo pitched all five innings for the Bobcats, where she only allowed one run on one hit, walked a batter, and struck out eight in the win.
In the second game, Cuozzo pitched in relief in the 7-5 win against Sidney, where she picked up another victory. Celeste Baldwin started game two.
With the game tied at five, heading to the top of the sixth inning, Danica Park drove in two runs on a long single that ended up being the game-winner as Sidney was held in their final at-bats.
B-G totaled 12 hits with both Jayslin and Johnna Henderson and Baldwin managing multiple hits. Baldwin and Park also contributed with two RBIs in the win.
Norwich fell 12-3 to Seton Catholic. Three JV players earned varsity experience as seventh grader Brianna Cirigliano raked a triple along with her sister Ava and Caitlin Wetterhahn. Brooke Rogers played a big role on defense with several grabs in the outfield.
