Local Track Teams Compete At Oneonta Invite

ONEONTA - On Friday, Chenango County was well represented at the Oneonta Invitational as Norwich, Unadilla Valley, Oxford, and Bainbridge-Guilford attended the meet. The Norwich Purple Tornado boys’ track team brought home the victory as the Sidney girls outlasted Cooperstown and UV to win.

NORWICH

BOYS:

The Norwich boys track team earned the top finish of the day with 116 points scored. The relay teams picked up 16 points with a first place victory in the 4000 meter distance medley relay before taking third in the 4x800.

Richard Fuller, Aleks Smietana, and Lucas Craddock led the way with first place finishes in their respective events. Fuller, a junior for the Purple Tornado, achieved first place and set a new personal time in the 200 meter dash of 23.15 seconds. Teammate Gabe Decker finished in fourth place with his own best time of 23.86. Fuller also finished second in the 400 meter run, setting a new best time of 50.47 that ranks in the NY top 50.

Decker also came in second for the 400 meter hurdles with a new time of 59.63 with Gage Titsworth in third place with a new personal record of 1:00.90. Caden Sutton rounded out the top sprinters with a second place finish in the mile. Caden established a new personal best time of 4:44.67. His brother Nic Sutton, who is in eighth grade, finished in ninth place with a time of 5:15.90.

For field events, Aleks and Lucas picked up several top finishes. Aleks earned first in the discus throw with a throw of 134 feet, six inches. He also finished third in the shot put event (41-0) with teammate Harrison Matlack-Grey in fifth place (39-4.75) and Drew Westervelt in eighth (38-5).

Lucas achieved two first place finishes and one second place finish in the high jump. In the long jump, he had the top jump of 21 feet, 1 1/4 inches, which is a new personal record. He jumped 45 feet, 11 1/2 inches in the triple jump, which made the NY top 10 list.

He made the NY Top 25 with a jump of 6-2 in the high jump, but took second behind Chenango Valley’s Tyler Norton (6-4). Senior Jerell Stokes earned a new personal best in the triple jump with a jump of 41 feet, four inches, which was good for second place. He also finished fifth in the long jump event (19-4).

GIRLS:

The Norwich girls finished in seventh place with Josey Ryan, Lara Tefft, Olivia Schiraldi, and Kyra Brunick-Davis as the top finishers on the day.

Eighth grader Josey Ryan finished fourth in the 100 meter dash with a new best time of 13.62 seconds. She also came in ninth place in the 200 meter dash, which she ran in a new time of 28.49. Her sister Brynley, a seventh grader, ran the same event in a best 29.02 for 12th place.

Sophomore Kyra Brunick-Davis ran the mile in 6:24.79 for fourth place as Mya Barnes finished 15th.

Lara Tefft excelled in her field events as she had two big finishes in the discus and shot put. Her best finish was in the shot put where she finished second with a throw of 30 feet, a new personal record. She also picked up a new personal-best in the discus (75-10), which was good for fourth place.

Olivia Schiraldi earned fifth place in the high jump with a jump of four feet, 10 inches, setting a new personal best. Emma Urgo finished one spot ahead of her with the same 4-10 mark, which is also her best. Urgo also took eighth place in the triple jump (30-7.50) to round out the day for Norwich.

UV

GIRLS:

The Unadilla Valley Storm girls’ track team continued to do well and took third place with 60 points. Junior Jaiden Schrag and sophomore Gracie Gorrell continue to excel in their respective events. Jaiden and Gracie led the 4x800 team to a second place finish along with teammates Molly Gorrell, and Bella Potter.

Individually, Jaiden earned two top finishes in the 400 meter hurdles and long jump and took second in the 100 meter hurdles. She ran the 400 meter hurdles in 1:09.42, which is a new best time. Her jump of 15 feet, 10 1/4 inches led the girls’ long jump while she finished second in the 100 meter hurdles at 17.15 seconds behind Sidney’s 16.50.

Gracie Gorrell placed well in both the 200 and 400 meter dashes. She ran a time of 58.84 seconds in the 400 meter dash to earn the top finish and that placed her in the NY top 50. Her sister Molly, who is a seventh grader, finished eighth with a time of 1:06.71. Gracie also took second place in the 200 meter dash, which she ran in 26.59 seconds, just short of Cooperstown’s 26.52. Molly finished in 13th place (29.55).

Freshman Natalya Schrag achieved a new personal best time of 6:13.57 in the mile run for third place to round out the top performers for the Storm girls.

BOYS:

The UV boys’ track team finished 13th with 12 points. While they had a tough time picking up points, they still had great performances on the day from Jacob Prentice, Blake Wright, Trason Murray, and Haywood Edwards.

Sophomore Jacob Prentice added onto the UV boys’ pole vault record with a new best of 11 feet, which was good for second place. He also finished fifth in the boys’ 400 meter dash with a new personal time of 54.20 seconds. Jacob also ran the 200 meter dash, where he came in 12th place, but again picked up a new best time of 24.91.

Haywood Edwards earned one point as he finished sixth in the 400 meter dash, running the event in 54.45 seconds, a new personal best. He also set a new time of 24.70 in the 200 meter dash, finishing ninth.

Tucker Cattanach finished ninth in the triple jump with a jump of 36 feet, 10 inches. He also picked up a 12th place finish in the high jump (5-4), which was a new record for the Junior.

Seniors Trason Murray and Blake Wright both competed in the discus throw. Murray came in sixth place with a throw of 114 feet, four inches, which is a new record. Wright finished in ninth place with a throw of 104-10. Murray also finished 14th in the shot put event (35-6) with Wright in 20th (33-9).

OXFORD:

GIRLS:

The Oxford Blackhawks girls’ track team had a good meet and finished eighth, behind Norwich, with 22 points. Oxford was led by Seniors Hailey Fleury and Taylor Smith while underclassmen Abby Denz, Raya Warner, and Jayne Fleury also did well.

Taylor Smith’s best performance was in the 2000 meter steeplechase event, where she finished second. Her time of 8:51.71 was a new personal best. She also picked up two sixth place finishes in the 800 meter run and in the triple jump.

In the 800 meter run, Smith ran the event in 2:34.61, which was also a new best, while jumping 31 feet, four inches in the triple jump event.

Hailey Fleury earned fourth place in the long jump (15-3). She also picked up one point with a sixth place finish in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.75 seconds. Her sister Jayne, an eighth grader, ran a new best time of 1:06.50 in the 400 meter dash for sixth place.

Sophomore Abby Denz did well in her respective field events, where her best finish of the day was in the triple jump. In the triple jump, she finished third with a jump of 33 feet, 3 1/2 inches. She also competed in the long jump event, where she took seventh (14-11).

Oxford’s Raya Warner earned seventh in the shot put with a throw of 24 feet, 11 inches and achieved a new personal best in the discus throw. Her new throw of 74-6 was good for ninth place.

BOYS:

The Blackhawks boys’ team also finished eighth with 19 points. Victor Richette, Donovan Rickard, Jerry Hornbeck, Gordon Smith, and Anthony Bourn led the way for Oxford.

Richette, Rickard, Hornbeck, and Jared Sheridan competed as a team for the boys’ 4x800, coming away with a sixth place finish. Individually, Richette led the Blackhawks with a second place finish in the 200 meter dash with a new personal time of 23.55 seconds, just short of Norwich’s Richard Fuller’s 23.15.

Junior Jerry Hornbeck achieved a new best time of 12.01 in the 100 meter dash, just behind strong runners from Chenango Valley and Delhi as he finished third. Teammate Gordon Smith, a seventh grader, tied with GMU’s Brennan Finch for fourth place in the mile run. Both ran the event in 4:53.11, which was a new best time for Smith.

Anthony Bourn rounded out the top sprinters for the Blackhawks with a sixth place finish in the 3000 meter steeplechase. He ran the event in 11:29.22, setting a new personal best. Teammate Aiden Ives finished 11th with his new best time of 12:09.45.

Donovan Rickard led Oxford in the field events, where he picked up two seventh place finishes. He finished seventh in the long jump with a jump of 18 feet, 6 3/4 inches while jumping 37-4.5 in the triple jump. Both jumps were personal bests for the Sophomore.

B-G:

BOYS:

The Bobcats boys’ track team scored 22 points to finish seventh in the meet. Paving the way for B-G were Collin Dicks, Julian Pruskowski, Connor Vredenburgh, and Matthew Wombacker.

All the gentlemen did well in their own field events with Dicks finishing second in the long jump and third in the triple jump. His jump of 20 feet, 5 3/4 inches was a new personal best in the long jump while achieving a new best of 39-2.75 in the triple jump behind tough competition.

Pruskowski finished behind his teammate in fourth place in the triple jump (38-10.50). He also finished 11th in the 400 meter dash with a time of 55.73, just missing a new personal best. However, he did achieve a new best of 24.99 seconds in the 200 meter dash for 13th place.

Senior Connor Vredenburgh earned fourth place in the discus with a throw of 117 feet, nine inches and came in 19th place for shot put (33-11.5). Matthew Wombacker took 11th in the pole vault event, where he tied with four others at 7-6 and set a new record.

GIRLS:

The Bainbridge-Guilford girls’ track team didn’t fare well in this meet as they tied with Whitney Point for 16th place. Maddie Ingham picked up the team’s only six points with a third place finish in the 800 meter run. The seventh grader ran the event in a new best of 2:24.68.

Aside from Ingham, Elanor Sprow earned a 12th place finish in the triple jump with a jump of 29 feet. Laila Williams participated in the high jump, where she finished 14th (4-2). Sage Pruskowski took 16th in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:11.43.
