NORWICH - On June 17, local powerlifter Daniel Conant became the 100 % RAW New York State Powerlifting bench press champion in the 198 weight class. Dan broke his own record and the state bench record of 358.5 pounds at the federation’s NY American Challenge event held in Owego.
Dan, a Norwich High School 2015 alum, started weight lifting when he was 12 years old after his brothers and cousins convinced him to go to the gym. It has now become a hobby for him today, which he considers a “nice challenge.” Dan also competes in about four or five meets annually.
When he’s not at meets, Dan can be found at the Norwich Family YMCA weight room daily whether it's working or working out. He is a YMCA staff member and a first responder in making sure everyone using the equipment is safe at all times, and he straightens up the room when needed.
The YMCA weight room is also where Dan prepares for his powerlifting meets. Dan purchased and invested in his own equipment, which sits in the corner of the room. Dan said he bought the equipment, so that he can properly prepare for the meets. Dan first started attending meets about nine years ago and actively checks around at any chance to sign up for the next event. The furthest he has traveled was to Las Vegas last year, where he enjoyed the experience.
With the big accomplishment made at the 100 % RAW event, Dan qualifies for the IPO Drug-Tested North American Championship held at Niagara Falls in October. Dan will be representing the USPA North East Federation and competing against 480 contenders. While it’ll be a good challenge for him, Dan is hoping to compete in a few more meets to help him prepare. Good luck Dan.
