CHENANGO COUNTY — The Chenango County Board of Supervisors has enacted legislation for the DMV to begin collecting a vehicle use tax from the residents of the County, which will be collected by the DMV in support of Chenango County’s Ambulance Service.

Beginning May 17, 2023, the vehicle use tax will be collected for original registrations as well as renewals that expire on or after May 17, 2023.

The vehicle use tax for Chenango County is $5 a year for passenger vehicles weighing 3,500 lbs. or less; $10 a year for passenger vehicles weighing 3,501 or more; and $10 a year for the commercial-type vehicles for which we collect a tax.

Unfortunately, the registration renewals are issued directly from the Albany DMV and may not have the correct updated renewal fee amount due. If the fee is not correct, our County DMV office is mailing the renewal, check, and an explanation back to the customer to request the corrected amount of the renewal fee.

Once Albany DMV makes the correct changes to the registration, this will no longer be an issue. Chenango County DMV apologizes for the inconvenience and confusion.
