BAINBRIDGE – After Sherburne swept a doubleheader against Whitney Point on Wednesday night, they were back in action on Thursday taking on Bainbridge-Guilford. The game was decided in extra innings. B-G won 9-8 in the bottom of the eighth inning to improve to 4-1 on the 2023 summer PONY season.
Throughout the contest, Sherburne took advantage of B-G mishaps on defense to keep up with the Thunder. The Marauders scored first off an error, but B-G quickly answered back to make it 3-1 after the first off Sherburne’s defensive troubles. One run scored on a bases loaded hit by pitch while an error sent in two runs. Then, the game became a back-and-forth affair, leading to extras.
When Sherburne tied it at three in the top of the fourth inning, B-G regained the lead and extended it to 6-3. Timmy Kinter hit into a fielder’s choice, driving in a run while Brayden Swartwout drove in a pair on an RBI double.
Sherburne tied it at six in the sixth inning as Chadwick Nower hit an RBI single. The Marauders took a brief 8-6 lead in the seventh as one run scored on an error before Wesley Fisher drove in a run on a single to center field.
B-G was not dismayed at that point as they were down two runs in the bottom of the seventh. In fact, they tied the game up again, sending it into extras. Swartwout and Mason Aquisto both stole home with tremendous base running and with the game on the line.
After coming in the game with two outs in the top of the seventh, Brayden Swartwout was back on the mound for the eighth, where he was credited with a save at the end of the night.
In the top of the eighth, Sherburne had a runner on with a walk, but failed to score as Swartwout struck out two and fielded a groundball for the final out. This scoreless defensive effort sent the Thunder offense ready to strike in the bottom half of the inning.
With one out, Kaiden Seymour singled on a line drive to center field. During Timmy Kinter’s at-bat, Seymour stole second to get into scoring position. Kinter drove in Seymour with his own single and his second RBI of the game to walk it off for B-G.
Kaiden earned the win on the mound for the Thunder, going four and two-thirds, allowing five unearned runs on four hits, and struck out eight batters. Kinter and Swartwout pitched in relief, where they both collected two strikeouts each.
Wesley Fisher and Owen Brown pitched for Sherburne. Fisher went four innings on the losing side before Brown finished the final three and a third innings. Both pitchers combined with nine strikeouts.
Sherburne (2-4) heads to Norwich on Monday as B-G (4-1) hosts Oxford on Tuesday. Both games are expected to start at 6 p.m. Check the Otsenango PONY League page through league lineup.com for more information.
