NORWICH – Following a request to check the welfare of a missing person who had not been seen in recent days, police conducted a search of the victim's residence at about 6:30 p.m. on Sunday and located a body inside an apartment at 89 North Broad Street in Norwich.
UPDATE: Monday afternoon police identified the victim as 44-year-old Alisa Ann Martin. Norwich Police are asking for anyone with information to call 607-336-8477.
“The Norwich Police Department is investigating a suspicious death that occurred at 89 North Broad Street,” said Norwich Police Chief Reuben Roach.
Roach said discoveries at the scene had caused a preliminary police investigation to treat the incident as a potential homicide. Roach said investigators could not rule out foul play.
Police are waiting to release more information pending results from an autopsy.
The chief confirmed the deceased was the missing person, and they had resided in an apartment at the building. Officers had to force their way inside, he said.
Neighbors who lived next door, who were questioned by police, told the Evening Sun they heard no unusual noises or saw anything suspicious in recent days.
“Due to the conditions of the body and the scene we are looking at things very seriously. We absolutely should not rule out foul play,” said Roach.
The forensic investigations team from the New York State Police and investigators from the Chenango County Sheriff's Office are also assisting.
Police cordoned off the area and have maintained a constant presence. Officers were seen searching the entire property late into Sunday night, including the yard and driveway. Officers were still there Monday morning.
No other information was available at press time Monday morning. Read more about it in tomorrow's Evening Sun.
