NEW BERLIN – The Unadilla Valley PONY League team stormed through a tough summer season, finishing it off with a 13-3 loss to Schenevus on Monday night. UV battled through seven innings, where despite defensive struggles, they stuck together as a team and scored three lucky runs.
Schenevus took a early 3-0 lead off four hits in the first inning, but UV was able to hold them from scoring in both the second and third innings. UV got runners on base in both scoreless innings, but failed to score until the fourth inning.
Schenevus added one run in the fourth before the Storm came back on offense. Teagin Eccleston came in to score UV’s first run as home plate was unoccupied. The catcher was assisting with a unsuccessful pick-off attempt that allowed Eccleston to take a chance and score from third base.
Schenevus batted around its lineup in the fifth inning and almost earned the win on a mercy 10-run rule, but UV’s Seth Meagley was phenomenal in center field and recorded the last out of the inning.
Down 10-1, UV scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to get one more inning of play. Eccleston scored his second run of the night, scoring on a passed ball before Declan Potter scored on a sacrifice fly from Nolan Roper.
UV scored three runs on three hits with Zayne Dibbell, Declan Potter, and Nic Crandall each picking up a hit in the loss. Natalie Crandall struck out eight batters through four and a third innings pitched while Potter finished the game and had three strikeouts.
UV finished the 2023 PONY League season with a 1-9 record. UV’s only win came in a tough 12-11 battle against Worcester on July 7.
