OXFORD – After handing Norwich its first loss on Sunday night, the Oxford Blackhawks PONY League team headed back home to face Sherburne. Oxford’s bats and tremendous base running led them to a 11-2 victory in the final regular season game.
Sherburne got on the board first as Levi Neuenschwander led the inning off with a single, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He came in to score on another wild pitch.
Oxford quickly answered back with a three run inning and never looked back as their offense paved the way, scoring in all but one inning. The Blackhawks led off with two hard singles before a walk. Nic Dodzweit drove in a pair with a long single to left field and Degan Endress sent in a run on a groundout RBI to make it 3-1.
Oxford’s big inning came in the second, scoring a game-high of four runs. With two outs, Oxford reached on a walk and a pop up single before Landen Olinski drove in a run with a single to center field. Olinski came into score himself as he stole second, third, and home. Caden Rifanburg also stole home before Olinski took third. Kyle Benjamin also drove in a run to finish off the inning.
Oxford collected 11 hits and 13 stolen bases in the win. Caden Rifanburg went 3-for-4 at the plate while Olinski and Dodzweit also picked up multiple hits. Dodzweit led the team with three RBIs as Conner Dunagan and Olinski both stole a team-high of three bases.
Sherburne was led by Levi Neuenschwander, who went 3-for-3, and Blaine Fleming, who collected two hits in the loss. Wesley Fisher, Caleb Neuenschwander, and Levi Neuenschwander all earned time on the mound for the Marauders, combining with 11 strikeouts.
Conner Dunagan started for the Blackhawks, allowing one run on four hits, one walk, and struck out seven batters through four innings. Caden Rifanburg finished the game in relief.
Oxford will now await their next opponent in the playoffs. The Blackhawks finished the regular season with a 6-2 record behind Norwich in second place. Sherburne finished 3-5 and is tied with Bainbridge-Guilford for third place. It is unknown if Sherburne will be advancing to the playoffs as well.
