NORWICH — The Chenango County 4-H livestock Auction bidding will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, August 11, in the Follett show ring at the fairgrounds.
Executive Director of Cornell Corporative Extension Chenango County Craig Brown said, “The Scholarship program is for kids from 5 to 18. They can apply for one species per year and once awarded that species, the next year they must try a different species. They can try Turkey one year, swine the next year and meat goats the next, etc; It’s up to them.”
He said the animals come from families that work through their program or county. If the kids or family don’t know anyone, they will match them with animals that they know are from reputable breeders.
“We don’t sell animals ourselves,” he added.
Brown explained all livestock auction animals such as goats, sheep, swine, beef cattle, and rabbits are alive at the auction. You can walk out with live animals if you want to breed them or continue raising them; but must make arrangements to pick the animal up before or after the daily fair. If you wish to have the animal processed, there are people at the auction that will truck the animal for further action. The fee for processing is not included with bid for animal.
