NORWICH — The Norwich Family YMCA located at 68-70 North Broad Street is re-opening the pool on September 5.
YMCA Executive Director and CEO James Mullen said, “We are in the midst of our scheduled two week shutdown period from August 21 to September 4,”
He said the shut down was just basic maintenance and cleaning they do each year. Normally, he said it's a one week shutdown but every three to five years they assess the quality of the water to determine if it needs to be drained and fresh water added.
“One week prior to the shutdown we had a pool pump seize up and had to get a new one but that has been fixed,” said Mullen.
He explained their two-week shutdown included draining the pool, replacing the pool pump, replacing some levelers, painting, cleaning windows, acid washing the pool tile, cleaning stainless steel, draining the whirlpool, adding a new sand filter and sand for the whirlpool and a few additional tasks
“The pool is a pretty impressive operation as it runs 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, 365 days per year,” He added.
The Oneonta YMCA on Ford Avenue and the Oneida YMCA will continue to reciprocate pool usage through the Nationwide Membership program for YMCA members. Please call to reserve a lane and review pool schedules for availability.
According to the Norwich YMCA Facebook page the YMCA pool temporary shut down didn't stop the Fun Club Pre K to six graders from swimming as they were asked to bring a bathing suit and towel and took a walk to the Norwich pool
