GREENE – The Greene Trojans field hockey kicked off its 2023 season and home opener against Maine-Endwell on Thursday night. Both teams were fierce, but the defending class ‘A’ champions took care of business late in double overtime to win 2-1.
The game was scoreless up until the third quarter. With Maine-Endwell down one player due to receiving a card, Greene put themselves in great offensive position to receive a penalty corner and took advantage of it. Claire Flanagan scored with 2:43 left to put the Trojans up 1-0.
The score remained 1-0 until the final nine minutes of regulation. M-E tied the game with a corner of their own and received another one at the end of the quarter with a chance to win, but Greene’s goalie Braelyn Blakeslee stood her ground. The game went into overtime, notched at one a piece.
Both goalies continued to be confident in the box, blocking crucial shots. Greene’s Josie Dutcher had a few breakaways, but couldn’t put anything through her opponent’s goalie at that time, sending the game into the second overtime.
With 37 seconds left in double overtime, Dutcher found another breakaway and this time, she tricked the goalie and scored the game-winner. This big breakaway was set up, thanks to teammate Ahraya Whitt on a big stop on M-E’s penalty corner.
Greene also honored former field hockey coach Nancy Bromley and the late Nancy Barrows at halftime while also celebrating the 30 year anniversary of the 1993 field hockey state champions. All-around, it was a great night for Greene.
Greene takes on a tough Whitney Point team on Tuesday, September 5.
