SHERBURNE – The annual Sherburne-Earlville kickoff soccer tournament was held over the weekend and featured four Chenango County teams. For the girls, Norwich, Oxford and host S-E represented the county, along with Hamilton. UV/GMU, Oxford, S-E, and Vernon-Verona Sherill represented the boys.

The tournament kicked off on Friday and concluded on Saturday with the consolation games and championships. Unfortunately, no local county teams won the tournament as Hamilton defeated Norwich girls and V-VS earned the win over the UV/GMU boys in the championship games.

Friday’s Games:

UV/GMU 2-Oxford 1 (Boys)

Devon Hartwell kicked off his final season as a UV/GMU Storm with two goals off Oxford’s Kayden Renfrow. Both goals were unassisted. Landen Olinski gave the Blackhawks an early 1-0 lead with six minutes remaining in the first half on the first touch after a corner kick. Renfrow finished the game strong in goal and prevented Hartwell from scoring a hat trick, but the Blackhawks’ offense couldn’t score as Zach Welch held up on his own side.

Saturday’s Games:

Kayla Figary-Knapp came up big again for the Blackhawks with two goals while Paige Rickard, Taegan Manwarren, and Abby Denz all found the net once. Sofia Ferreira contributed with an assist on Denz’s goal. Jalin McCarthy pushed the S-E offense with a few shots on goal while Savanna Hook and Alex Grzymkowski had some touches as well, but couldn’t get anything through Christine Seiler and Raya Warner in goal.

S-E’s Opal Amann-Burns and Alex Grzymkowski, along with Oxford’s Jocie Finch and Kayla Figary-Knapp, all made the all-tournament team following the game.

Oxford 2 - S-E 1 (Boys Consolation)

It took two overtimes for the Oxford Blackhawks and the Sherburne-Earlville boys to decide a winner. Both teams were tied at one before Donovan Rickard scored on a pass from Jerry Hornbeck on a corner kick. Oxford won 2-1 in double overtime.

The game was scoreless after the first half of play with both Parsons and Renfrow dominating in goal. Sherburne scored first in the second half as Michael Behret hit a shot from the deep sideline that caught the side netting on the far post. It would be 1-0 Marauders until Landen Olinski tied it up with seven minutes remaining in regulation. Landen outran the defense to take a pass from Sam Hendricks and got it past Parsons.

Olinski and Aidan Amin earned all-tournament honors along with S-E’s Behret and Robert Schaefer.
