OXFORD – The Oxford Blackhawks boys soccer team hosted Section III’s Madison on Monday night, which was also senior night. Prior to kick-off, the Blackhawks honored its two seniors; Aidan Amin and Jerry Hornbeck. Both seniors have been big contributors to the team throughout their high school careers.
Oxford gave their two seniors something to celebrate as they defeated the Blue Devils 2-1 with a great approach late in the second half. Down 1-0 at halftime, the Blackhawks prepared to have a strong offensive second half and did just that with around 17 minutes left in regulation.
Hornbeck found a big breakaway and crossed it over to Blake Barrows, who tied the game at one apiece. It was Blake’s first varsity goal.
The Blackhawks were not done. They quickly recovered the ball and set themselves up with a few consecutive corner kicks. Keeping the ball over on their side, Oxford found room to take an advantage. Right off a corner kick, Jared Sheridan picked up the rebound and scored the game-winner to give the seniors a win on their special night.
Oxford’s defense played aggressively and along with tremendous saves by goalkeeper Kayden Renfrow, they held on to their lead. This victory was Oxford’s third win of the season.
The Blackhawks are still looking for their first official MAC win of the season and is hopeful it’ll come with a few scheduled games remaining. Oxford heads to Greene on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
