NEW BERLIN – The Unadilla Valley Storm girls soccer team is on a roll as they won the 2023 MAC championship and now advance to the next round of Class C sectionals. UV defeated Delhi 3-0 on Wednesday.
Both teams were competitive in the first 40 minutes of play in a scoreless game. The Storm saw great opportunities on offense, but Delhi defenders broke up scoring chances near the top of the box.
UV pushed through within the first 10 minutes of the second half with a breakaway goal by leading senior Jaiden Schrag. For Schrag, that was her 22nd goal of the season.
The momentum continued as the defense helped move the ball up field, setting up a nice chance for Shelby Rose. Rose had an opportunity at around the 30-35 yard line and netted in a beautiful long shot.
Natalie Crandall would put the finishing touches with a minute left as she received a pass from Jaiden Schrag. Crandall caught the goalkeeper off guard and scored her eighth goal of the season.
These scoring chances were also set up by long balls to the left corner that Myriah Taylor hustled to get, helping the offense stay strong.
The Storm defense held Delhi to just two shots on goal with two tremendous saves made by Kalie Fernandez-Naughton.
UV moves on to host Elmira-Notre Dame, who comes in as a fifth seed, on Saturday. Elmira-Notre Dame defeated Seton Catholic 2-1 in the first round. Saturday’s game is scheduled for 11 a.m. at UV’s stadium field.
