GREENE – In the final 2023 regular season game, the Greene Trojans football team faced off against neighboring Oxford. Greene came away with the 60-20 victory and now prepare for the 8-man semi-finals, upcoming next weekend.

“The kids played well tonight and we got off to a great start,” coach Dave Gorton said.

His team had a 39-8 lead after the first quarter. The Trojans, who have seen a lot of non-league games against Section III this year, picked up one final divisional win in a game led by its seniors.

“We had some tough games for sure in non-league play this season,” Gorton said. “ I am pleased that we won the division again. The fast start tonight was something that sometimes we haven’t been ready to play as quickly as I wanted to.”

The standout players from the night for Greene was Joel Vielandi, William Dunlap, Jaden Eroshevich, and Derek Renfer, who all will be graduating this school year. Eroshevich, the Trojans’ quarterback, had a few big passes to Joel and Bill for touchdowns while Renfer had a big kick-off return touchdown.

Oxford, who are still in rebuild mode as a young team, have seen major improvements this year, especially in the final few games with bringing more players to the varsity level.

“Tonight was a great night, even though we lost,” Oxford coach Mitch Cluff said. “We have a bright future with this team and are looking forward to a great off-season and already have some big plans ahead, which I’m really excited for.

Greene is expecting a rematch against a familiar 8-man opponent for the semi-finals, which is unknown at this time. The game is expected to be played next Saturday, November 4 at Binghamton Alumni Stadium, similar to last year’s schedule. Greene battled Moravia in 2022 semi-finals, where they came up short.

“We know we’re getting a rematch, but don’t know who we’re playing for sure,” Gorton said. “We had some tough games, especially against Trumansburg, but we’re putting that behind us. If we play Groton again, we know it’s going to be a battle.”
