SHERBURNE - The Sherburne-Earlville boys basketball team hosted their annual tip-off tournament over the weekend, welcoming local Unadilla Valley, Cazenovia, and Vernon-Verona Sherrill. On Friday, host S-E advanced to the tournament championship game after a big win against UV, but fell to Cazenovia to take second place. UV improved in the Varsity consolation game, but fell to a tough VVS team.
S-E started out hot in Friday's opening round with a 15-1 run against UV after the first quarter. UV caught up, but were down 31-11 at halftime and fell by a final score of 56-29. S-E's heavy pressure defense forced several turnovers and the Storm were called on multiple travel violations.
The Marauders were led by senior Darren Miles, who laid down three three-pointers and finished with a team-high of 15 points. Teammate Dilen Maceda had plenty of good movement throughout the first three quarters to add 12 points. UV's Denzel Peter had 10 points while Haywood Edwards finished with six points in the loss.
UV boosted their confidence into Saturday's consolation game against VVS, who lost to Cazenovia on Friday. Despite a 55-42 loss, UV stayed in rhythm with the Red Devils and both teams were tied at 21 each at halftime. The Red Devils picked up the pace in the third quarter with 25 points to earn the overall advantage.
Haywood Edwards led the Storm with 17 points, knocking down three three's in the midst while Zach Smith finished with 10 points.
After watching Cazenovia put up 68 points against VVS in the tournament's opening round, S-E knew the championship game would be intense. It surely was a battle for both teams with Cazenovia on top 56-44. The Lakers took a demanding 12 point lead from halftime (32-21) to finish out strong in the second half. S-E played up to speed in the final 16 minutes but comeback efforts were cut short and its top starters were limited.
Off the bench, Garret Winton led the Marauders with 11 points while senior Aaron Key led the starters with nine points in the loss. Winton and Noah Bigford were named to the all-tournament team.
S-E (1-2) travel to Richfield Springs on Tuesday at 7 p.m. while UV (0-3) has a bit of a resting period as they play at Edmeston on December 11 at 7 p.m.
