SHERBURNE —The Sherburne-Earlville Lady Marauders hosted their annual tip-off tournament featuring local Unadilla Valley, neighboring Norwich, and Class D's Richfield Springs/Owen D. Young.
Both the Norwich Jv and Varsity teams defeated S-E in the tournament's championship game while S-E took second and Unadilla Valley came in fourth place over the weekend.
The Norwich Purple Tornado opened the tournament with a 20-point 61-41 victory over Tri-Valley's Richfield Springs/ODY. Emma Urgo (23) and Josey Ryan (20) both excelled the boards while Brynley Ryan had 12 points in the high scoring affair. Next, S-E faced the Unadilla Valley Storm in a Section III vs Section IV match-up, where the Marauders came away with the 46-32 victory. S-E's efforts were led by Hannah Todd-Rogers (13 points) and Alex Grzymkowski with 12 points. UV's Adrienne Hodge led all scorers with 14 points in the loss.
Based on Friday's outstanding performances, the crowd knew Saturday's games would only boost the intensity. UV faced the Richfield Springs/ODY Eagles in the consolation game, falling in the final minutes 36-33. The Eagles forced UV to turn the ball over in the last 30 seconds and then capped the victory off with two made free-throws. Hodge led the Storm with 10 points with Natalie Crandall behind her with eight points in the loss. Hodge also received all-team recognition following the end of the championship game.
After a wild finish in the consolation game, things only got wilder between the two neighboring schools with Norwich and S-E battling it out. S-E's four-game win streak ended and the Marauders were handed their first loss of the season as Norwich held on in the final seconds to win 53-52. While Norwich struggled at the free-throw line, their offense and defense were able to strive to victory. Brynley Ryan's five points in the final scoring plays for Norwich helped seal the tight win. Alex Grzymkowski missed the game-winning three-pointer as the game expired.
Josey Ryan, who was named the tournament MVP, finished with 19 points while Emma Urgo, named to the all-tournament team, had 13 points as Brynley Ryan and Bella Dilorio tied with eight points. Grzymkowski led the Marauders with 16 points as teammate Chesnee Miller had 14 points and Hannah Todd-Rogers with 13 points in the close loss. Grzymkowski and Todd-Rogers also received all-tournament honors.
Great job to all local teams.
