GREENE – After a couple months of renovation and restocking inventory, Jenn and Mike Marsaln have reopened the New 5 & 10 Discount Groceries store located at 72 Genesee Street, in the Village of Greene, and offer a variety of brand name foods.

Owner Jenn Marsaln said, “We started off renting the building in 2014 when it was a variety store with discounted foods, but noticed other items didn’t sell yet the food was flying out of the store- so in 2017 we bought it and changed it to a discount grocery store.”

She said her husband Mike has some knowledge in this market. His parents owned multiple dollar store and discount stores in the area years ago, so he still had the connections for purchasing at low cost.

“We’re so thankful for the support of our wonderful community, without them we wouldn’t have grown into what we have become today,” said Marsaln. “This has helped us to expand into other communities and makes it possible to keep offering products at heavily discounted prices.”

Marsaln said they have many brand names including Ragu, Hormel, Jimmy Dean, Kraft, General Mills, Lindt Chocolate, Halo top, Jif, Blue Buffalo Dog food, and more, all deeply discounted from 30% to 90% off retail prices.

She said they hear all the time how thankful people are and families are saving a lot of money on their grocery bill and since there isn’t a grocery store in Greene, this helps residence and others that drive over an hour, to buy at low cost.

“We put about $40,000 of our money to repair and renovate the Greene location. Since it’s a historic building we wanted to keep it structurally sound,” she said. “We also own two other 5 & 10 Discount Groceries, one in Whitney Point and the other in Afton and have a total of 15 employees.”

She said they live within walking distance of the store in Greene and find they don’t like to leave the stores for too long.

“Mike does the ordering and I do the bookkeeping and paperwork, while we both do a lot of the physical stocking,” she added.

They accept EBT food stamps and get a lot of larger families that travel over an hour to purchase from their store. She said they have about 150 to 200 customers visiting daily.

The New 5 & 10 Discount Groceries store hours are Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
