NORWICH – The Norwich Purple Tornado and the Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton/Harpursville wrestling teams put on a show at Jack Jones gymnasium on Thursday night. The BGAH Bears snuck away with a 46-27 victory, but all wrestlers fought to the finish in the exciting Chenango County Section IV matchup. Some wrestlers competed up a weight class to be able to have an equal match.
Norwich’s Regan Roach kicked off the night with a tough match against BGAH’s Olivir Hilts in the 145 weight class. Roach held a 12-1 advantage after the second period and finally laid down the pin with a 1:12 remaining. Roach is already riding high with a 8-2 record with five pins.
Fellow senior Braden Reid is also off to a good start in his final wrestling season for Norwich. Reid got a quick pin against BGAH’s Levi Gregory within the first minute, which is his fourth pin and seventh win of the season at 215 pounds.
Evan Meek picked up his fifth pin of the season as he defeated BGAH’s Glen Miller III in 1:01. The senior is 5-3 through the first four events the team has competed in.
For the BGAH Bears, Blake Prisco competed in his first match since finishing fifth in the Clyde Cole Tournament and defeated Norwich’s Evyn Mckeraghan in the 152 weight class with a pin in 46 seconds. Teammate Ryan Blackman had the quickest pin of the night in 22 seconds against Norwich’s Aaron Bradbury in the 160 weight class. Damon Seymour, Elliott Briggs, Davis Barnard, and Silas Greenman also won their respective matches as Aiden DuVall and Zane Mumbulo earned wins by forfeits.
The most exciting match of the night for both teams was in the 116 weight class featuring BGAH’s Darren Florance and Norwich’s Maverick Beckwith. Both wrestlers established a history over years and faced off at the Clyde Cole Tournament at the beginning of the month.
Florance had defeated Beckwith three times prior to this regular season meeting, but Beckwith proved anything can happen on Thursday night. Florance jumped to a 3-0 advantage after the first period before Beckwith cut the lead to one (4-3) after the second. Beckwith fought down to the wire as he tied it up with 15 seconds left in the third period to force extras.
After two periods went by, the match was finally decided in the sixth round, where Beckwith picked up the two points he needed and hung on in the final seconds to get the 6-4 win.
Great job to both teams.
Norwich is competing in the Cato-Meridian Blue Devil Duals on Saturday while BGAH is at the Walton Cuneen Doane Tournament on Saturday.
