NEW BERLIN – With both teams coming off tough losses against Sidney, the Greene Trojans and the Unadilla Valley girls’ basketball teams faced off in the opening round of the UV holiday tournament. Greene came out with the big 54-33 win. With only three teams representing the girls’ side of the tournament, this game became a usual MAC league contest between both teams.
Greene fired away in the first quarter, starting off with a 10-0 run as UV finally picked up their first points of the game at the five minute mark. The Trojans were heavy on rebounding under the basket in those first eight minutes and quickly dribbled the ball down the court. However, they found themselves unable to move against a pressure heavy Storm defense, but they did pass the ball well.
UV tried to stay up tempo with Greene, but fell behind by 20 points after the third quarter. In the final eight minutes, the Storm offense was led by senior Jaiden Schrag who scored the team’s eight points in the quarter alone as she picked up multiple steals and drove to the basket. Schrag finished with a team-high of 12 points as Adrienne Hodge knocked down two three’s to follow suit with 11 points.
Greene’s Josie Dutcher posted 16 points with three three-pointers, as she found herself open to shoot throughout the contest. Freshman Mia Yahner stood tall with 14 points as Abby Yahner had eight points in the win. Greene improves to 4-1 on the season.
Both Greene and UV will face off against Section III and local Chenango County team Sherburne-Earlville in the next tournament game. UV plays S-E this afternoon at 3 p.m. while the match-up against Greene will be Friday at 2:45 p.m.
