UTICA – On Wednesday, the Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton/Harpursville, Norwich, and Unadilla Valley indoor track teams competed at the CNY Winter Classic held at Utica University. The three local Chenango County teams ran amongst an overall total of 48 schools. Full results can be found at ny.milesplit.com.
BGAH:
Girls:
It was a tough meet all around for all Chenango County teams on the day, but the BGAH girls came away with a few top performances. Ethne Degan set a new personal record in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:51.29, but finished second to Guilderland’s best 4:43.56. Aside from Degan, Maddie Ingham continues to improve with an eighth place finish in the 1000 meter run with her new best time of 3:14.95.
The Bears also collected personal bests in the fielding events. Olivia Nichols achieved a new best jump of four feet, eight inches in the high jump for 10th place as Makayla McCloud jumped a best 15-7.5 for 10th in the long jump. Emily Sprow finished 20th in the long jump, where she earned a new personal best of 14-6.25 and jumped a best 33 feet, two inches in the triple jump, finishing 10th.
Allison Hauptmann rounded out the day for BGAH girls with a 18th place finish in the weight-throw event, throwing her best of 25 feet, four inches.
Boys:
The BGAH boys were led by Collin Dicks, Kevin Lang, and Harpo Hardt, who each picked up at least one personal best in their respective events. Dicks led the Bears in three events as he ran for a new personal best of seven seconds in the 55 meter dash, where he finished 17th.
His best finish on the day was in the long jump with a jump of 20-6.5 for third place and jumped 39-8.75 for fifth in the triple jump. Freshman Harpo Hardt jumped a personal best 37 feet, six and a half inches, which was good for 17th place in the triple jump. Kevin Lang achieved a new best time of 39.16 seconds in the 300 meter dash for ninth place.
Norwich:
Girls:
The Norwich Purple Tornado girls had a rather challenging day, but pushed through with some solid performances. Ava Cirigliano and Annie Boland came away with top runs for Norwich. Cirigliano finished 18th in the 400 meter dash, where she earned a new personal best time of 1:06.46 as Boland set a new best time of 5:57.50 in the 1500 meter run, which was good for 25th place.
Junior Lara Tefft led Norwich in the fielding events where she finished sixth in the shot put with a new personal throw of 29 feet, 11 and a quarter inches. She also accomplished a new best in the weight-throw event, throwing 29-8 for 11th place.
Boys:
The Norwich Boys excelled as a team, where they tied for fifth place with some strong performances on the day. Richard Fuller, Gabe Decker, and Caden Sutton led the Purple Tornado with their speed in the races. Fuller and Decker both competed in the 400 meter dash, where Fuller took second with a new best time of 51.28 seconds as Decker finished sixth with his own best of 53.65. Sutton ran a new best of 2:10.12 in the 800 meter event, finishing 10th.
Lucas Craddock led Norwich in the fielding events, where he tied his own indoor track personal record in the high jump event, jumping a top 44-6.5 against 37 other competitors. Craddock also jumped a new personal best six feet, four inches in the high jump for second place. Teammate Gabe Blenis set a new record in the weight-throw with a throw of 50-6, which put him in third place.
UV:
Girls:
Gracie Gorrell and Kalie Fernandez-Naughton led the Unadilla Valley girls team, who were also challenged throughout the meet. Gorrell held the top finish as she came in sixth place in the 400 meter dash with a new personal best time of 1:03.97 while finishing 10th in the 300 meter dash with a new best time of 44.84 seconds. Fernandez-Naughton achieved a new personal best jump of 15 feet, 1 3/4 inches in the long jump, which she tied with Shenendehowa’s Ella Perino for 14th place.
Boys:
The UV boys were short-handed in Wednesday’s meet as they relied heavily on juniors Jacob Prentice and Alex Kemnah. Prentice led the Storm with a ninth place finish in the pole vault and a 18th place finish in the 300 meter dash. He set a new best time of 39.56 seconds in the 300 meter dash while continuing to excel in the pole vault with a mark of 10-6, a new personal best for the winter season.
Kemnah also earned new bests in both the 800 meter and in the 1000 meter runs. He ran a best of 2:58.86 in the 1000 meter run for 16th place while finishing 26th in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:22.67.
