Wrestling: Norwich, BGAH, And Oxford/Greene Compete In Windsor Christmas Tournament

WINDSOR – Over the holiday break, the Norwich Purple Tornado, Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton/Harpursville, and the Oxford/Greene wrestling teams competed in the 66th annual Windsor Christmas Tournament. BGAH led the local county teams as they tied for 12th place with JD-CBA, collecting 60 points. Oxford/Greene finished 22nd with 42.5 points as Norwich came in 26th with 31 points. Tioga won the tournament overall with a whopping 202.5 points.

Norwich and BGAH had one wrestler in the finals with Maverick Beckwith for Norwich and Darren Florance for BGAH winning it all in their respective weight class. Beckwith defeated St Francis’ Cullen Edwards in a 6-2 decision in the 108 weight class finals. Florance won in a 10-0 major decision against Manhasset’s Will Russell in the 116 finals.

Beckwith won all four matches he wrestled, which included one pin in 3:27, another decision win, and win by technical fall. Other notable performances for Norwich include Regan Roach, who went 2-2 on the day with a technical fall win and a 5-4 decision over Towanda’s Wyatt Stranger. Braden Reid also picked up a win by a 2:55 pin over BGAH’s Zack Decamp in the 215 weight class.

Florance led BGAH with four wins on the day, where he had one quick pin win in 1:49, the major decision, and two technical fall wins. Teammates Ryan Blackman and Elliott Briggs picked up two wins on the day while Devon Rowe, Blake Prisco, Zack Decamp, and Zane Mumbalo all had one win in their matches.

Oxford-Greene’s Kade Mustin led the team with a fifth place finish. The eighth grader racked up five out of seven wins in the 116 weight class. He defeated Indian River’s Eli Faus in the fifth place match with a pin in 2:27. He also had a quick 43 second pin against Lansing’s Evan Sheils. Isaiah Sexton, Aiden Marcin, Urijah Dibble, and Troy Braman picked up two wins for the Blackhawks throughout their respective matches.
