NORWICH – On Friday, the Norwich Purple Tornado boys’ swim team hosted Greene in a rescheduled meet.
Despite both teams being small in size, all swimmers have been working hard at dropping swim times this season. The final score of the meet was Greene 78 to Norwich’s 43.
Greene picked up both relay wins with 10 points in the 200 yard freestyle relay with two teams and earned first in the 200 yard medley relay. Norwich came in second place in both relays with eight points. Both teams were strong in the individual events, going back-and-forth for top placement.
Greene’s Drake Malmquist and Norwich’s Kris Deuel swam well for their respective teams. Malmquist achieved first place int he 100 yard freestyle with a time of 1:03.38 as Izan Romero Requena came in third and Andrew Roberts in fourth place. Norwich’s Amon Oliver swam the event in 1:05.93 behind Malmquist in second place. Malmquist and Sherman Ludolph went first and second in the 100 yard backstroke.
Deuel earned victories in his two prominent events, including the 500 yard freestyle that he’s been improving on all season. In the 500 yard freestyle, he came in first place with a time of 5:42.95 while also achieving first in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:20.51).
Teammate Nate Shtrauch also had two first place finishes on the night, where he achieved a new best time. He set a new personal best time of 1:07.20 in the 100 yard butterfly ahead of Greene’s Jon Westcott (1:10.14). Shtrauch also finished first in the 50 yd freestyle with a time of 26.64.
Teammate Sharom Thinagaran swam in the same event, where he took fifth with a time of 38.46. Thinagaran also achieved his own personal best time of 37.92 seconds in the 200 free relay split with teammates Amon Oliver, Deuel, and Shtrauch. Amon Oliver earned a top finish in the 200 individual medley with a new best time of 2:45.18 ahead of Greene’s Gavin Demars (2:55.40).
Greene’s Austin deHaan was the lone swimmer in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:15.18. deHaan also swam in the 100 yard breaststroke, where he finished second with a time of 1:23.10.
Norwich will swim in their final home meet of the season against Windsor on January 30 at 5:30 p.m. while Greene hosts Chenango Valley for their final home meet before hitting the road for their last four regular season meets.
