HORSEHEADS - The Norwich Purple Tornado wrestling team traveled to Horseheads over the weekend, where they finished sixth in the STAC championship.
Norwich scored 99.5 points among their seven wrestlers.
Among those seven wrestlers, five made the podium while the other two will be back next season to work even harder to achieve placement. Norwich had one STAC champion as Maverick Beckwith won the 108 weight class. Beckwith went 3-0 on the day with a 5-4 decision against Chenango Valley's Anthony Valls in the finals. He also won by technical fall and by a pin. Beckwith earned the meet's most outstanding wrestler and is now 24-3 on the season.
Aside from Beckwith, senior Regan Roach earned second place in the 131 weight class, where he went 3-1. His only loss came against Horseheads' Cody Dale in the finals by a 10-0 major decision. Roach won two decisions and pinned Waverly's Jake Besecker in 4:52.
Patrick White took third in the 285 weight class, going 4-1. He won the third place match by a 3-1 decision against Vestal's Tye Jashan. White also picked up three wins by pin, including a quick 50 second pin against Horseheads' Seamus Carroll. His only loss came against Maine-Endwell's Joe Maraski in a 6-3 decision. White is 20-8 through his final season.
Braden Reid and Evan Meek both finished fourth in their respective weight class. Reid went 3-2 in the 215 weight class, where he won against Union-Endicott's Lucas Broder twice by pin. Reid went 1-1 against Oneonta's Jayden Zakala, where he lost in the finals by a 4-3 decision.
Meek finished fourth in the 124 weight class, going an even 2-2. He won two pins, including a 1:25 pin against Johnson City's Orian Wilcox. Meek lost his finals match to Elmira's Jonathan Guyette by injury default in 4:33. Jack Barnes and Jaxson Shaver did not place at the tournament, but are anxious to return next season.
Norwich heads to Sherburne-Earlville on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. It'll be their final regular season match before Section IV qualifiers on February 3.
