Winter Track: Norwich Competes In Section IV, Class Championships

CORTLAND – The Norwich Purple Tornado indoor track team traveled back to SUNY Cortland over the weekend to compete in the Section IV, Class A/B championship against nine other schools. The Norwich boys came in fourth place with 51 points while the girls finished 10th among 10 schools in their region with five points.

Boys:

The Norwich boys had success as a team in the 4x400 relay before doing well individually. A team of Caden Sutton, Cameron Carnachan, Gabe Decker, and Richard Fuller completed the 4x400 in a top first place finish with a time of 3:47.33.

Norwich also saw seniors Gabe Blenis and Lucas Craddock strive in their respective fielding events. Blenis earned a new personal best in the shot put event with a throw of 38 feet, six inches for an overall first place. Craddock continued to excel in his jumps with two top finishes in the high and triple jump, while tying for third in the long jump.

Craddock jumped six feet, two inches to win the high jump while jumping a 44-5.25 to take the triple jump victory. Kaiden Vidler finished 11th in the triple jump (33-6.25) and 15th in the long jump (16-1.25).

Aside from competing in the team relay, Caden Sutton ran a new personal best in the 600 meter run with a time of 1:31.79 for fifth place. Teammate Orren Doolittle set his own best in the same event with a time of 1:55.42 for 14th place. Nic Sutton ran the 1000 meters in 3:06.50 as Patrick Mulwane finished 20th (3:43.19).

Richard Fuller tied for ninth in the 55 meter dash with a time of 6.87 as Connor Marshall came in ninth in the 55 meter hurdles, completing the event in 9.42 seconds.

Girls:

The Norwich girls had a steady day at the class championships, where Ava Cirigliano and Reagan Decker picked up the team’s top performances. Cirigliano earned sixth place in the 300 meter dash with a time of 46.24 seconds as Decker finished sixth in the triple jump with a jump of 28 feet, 10 and a half inches. Decker also jumped 12-3.75 in the long jump for 15th place.

Annie Boland and Kyra Brunick-Davis both ran the 1500 meters, where Boland came in 10th with a time of 5:51 and Brunick-Davis finished 13th (6:03.63).

Emilia Pepe and Laci Zieno earned new personal bests in the 1000 meter run. Pepe set a new best time of 3:49.59 for 12th place while Zieno ran a best 5:07.45 for 14th place.

Lara Tefft rounded out the meet as she took fifth in the shot put event with a throw of 28 feet, seven and 3/4 inches.

Norwich is expected to compete at the Section IV classic along with other local Chenango County teams on February 17 at SUNY Cortland.
