BINGHAMTON – All local Chenango County wrestling teams competed in the section IV, division II championships over the weekend.
Sectionals were held at the Visions Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton and also featured a girls' sectionals as well. All local teams are sending at least one or more wrestlers to states in two weeks. Full sectional results can be found on cnywrestling.com.
BGAH:
The Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton/Harpursville wrestling team brought six wrestlers to sectionals, where Darren Florance became a three-peat sectionals champion. Darren won the 116 weight class, where he went 3-0, including a pin against Oxford-Greene's Kade Mustin in 1:46. He also pinned Odessa Montour's Lucas Hoffman in 4:50 in the finals match. He looks to become a repeat NY State champion after winning it all last year.
Ryan Blackman finished fifth in the 160 weight class after he went 2-2 on the day. He picked up two pins with his quickest against Windsor's Anthony Weaver in 30 seconds in the final match. Teammate Elliott Briggs took sixth in the 285 weight class, picking up the lone win against Deposit-Hancock's Ryan Stoss in a 6-2 decision and falling to Norwich's Patrick White twice.
Great efforts to Frank Parsons, Blake Prisco, and Devon Rowe for giving it their best shot for the Bears at sectionals.
NHS:
Maverick Beckwith came out a sectionals champion for the second straight year for the Norwich Purple Tornado in the 108 weight class. Beckwith won by techincal fall and by two close decisions to advance to his second State championships as only a freshman.
Braden Reid, Patrick White, and Regan Roach all finished out their high school careers with fifth place finishes. White picked up two wins against BGAH's Elliott Briggs as Roach won two decisions, including a close 8-6 decision against Unatego-UV's Shane Howell. One of Braden Reid's two wins came in overtime in a 3-1 sudden victory decision against Newark Valley's Seth Northrup.
Oxford-Greene:
After a strong 2023-2024 wrestling season, junior Aiden Marcin leads the Oxford-Greene Blackhawks as the lone States competitor. Marcin, who stands with an impressive 25-4 record, came in third in the 138 weight class. Marcin went 3-1 with his only loss to Windsor's Tim Boyce by a 12-1 major decision. He earned an 8-7 decision against Norwich's Regan Roach and pinned Deposit-Hancock's Asaac Mead in 52 seconds for his final match. Teammate Troy Braman finished sixth in the 131 weight class. Braman's only win came in a 5-4 decision against Windsor's Mason Colgan.
Kade Mustin was in the tough 116 weight class, where he picked up two wins, but didn't place. He won by decision and pinned Maine-Endwell's Evan Merrell in 4:41. Senior
Jared Milk gave it his best on the mat one final time in the 190 weight class.
UV:
The Unatego-Unadilla Valley Spartans came out on top of the MAC league this year as league champions and finished third in sectionals with Tioga claiming the Section IV title and Windsor in second. Wyatt Meade was the lone UV representative, who advanced to states. Meade came up just short of the top finish as he finished second in the 152 weight class. He fell to a tough Caden Bellis of Tioga in a 19-4 technical fall. Meade won his other two matches with a 1:11 pin against BGAH's Ryan Blackman and took down Windsor's Anthony Weaver in 1:34.
