CHENANGO COUNTY — In honor of Presidents' Day, U.S. Representative Marc Molinaro (NY-19) announced his office is having an essay writing contest for young students in New York's 19th Congressional District, which includes Chenango County.

Presidents' Day was on February 19. The holiday was originally established in 1879 to celebrate the birthday of George Washington.

Molinaro said the essay should be 400 words or less and is prompting third, fourth, and fifth grade students to consider what they would do, if they were president for a day.

He said this contest gives students an opportunity to practice their writing skills, use their creativity, and learn about government and presidential duties.

Molinaro asked, "What would you do if you were president for a day, would you make pizza-Friday, every day? Would you build playgrounds accessible to those with disabilities?”

“I want to hear from students across upstate New York on what they would do if they were the leader of the free world,” said Molinaro. “I’m excited to have students participate and submit their essays for this competition.”

C.S. Miller Books shop owner Jason Miller heard about the essay contest and decided to offer his support and host a brainstorming session at 7 p.m. on March 1, located at 14 Adams Street, in Norwich.

Miller said he’s excited about the idea of hosting this event and said his shop has many books that include stories and ideas to ignite creativity, plus, the ambiance is peaceful for quiet thinking and writing.

“This contest is an excellent opportunity for personal growth and learning. It encourages young minds to think critically about the world and their role within it,” said Miller.

“By providing a space in our bookshop for students to gather, share ideas, and write, we make a modest contribution to nurturing their development as thoughtful, literate, and creative individuals,” he said.
