OXFORD – At about 2:10 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, firefighters were called to the scene of home fire in the Town of Oxford.

Oxford First Assistant Chief Shane Ingraham said when he and the first crews arrived on scene they found a major fire already underway. “It was fully involved and working its way across the home,” he said.

Ingraham said a resident was home at the time of the fire and suffered non-life threatening injuries. They were taken by ambulance to Chenango Memorial Hospital.

The single story home, located at 3634 on County Route 32, East River Road, was a a “total loss,” said Ingraham.

The road was closed for a couple of hours heading out of the Village of Oxford as emergency crews responded to the fire.

A suspected cause and origin of the fire was not released and is being investigated by the Chenango County Office of Emergency Services' Fire Investigation Unit.

Crews at the scene said the fire began in the home before spreading to a nearby garage and destroying a pick-up truck in the driveway.

Ingraham along with at least 15 other volunteers from Oxford and other surrounding departments responded to the fire.

The Oxford Fire Department was assisted by the Norwich, Coventry, Guilford and Greene Fire Departments.

He thanked crews for their fast response and mutual aid. He said the fire spread quickly and when crews arrived they ensured the safety of the residents and worked to contain the fire.

Members of the American Red Cross and Chenango County Sheriff’s Office were also on scene to offer assistance.
