SHERBURNE — Join the Friends of Rogers in celebrating Earth Day at their annual outdoor celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 20 at the Rogers Environmental Education Center, located at 2721 State Route 80 in Sherburne.
This year's theme is "Getting to Know Your Wild Neighbors," and will focus on teaching Chenango County residents about the native animals and plants in the area.
"I really wanted to make this a chance for people to really get to know what is in their backyard," said Friends of Rogers Environmental Educator Ellen Rathbone. "So helping people learn to identify what is here or what should be here, and hopefully those who maybe don’t like things like bees and spiders will learn a little more appreciation."
Rathbone said she'll be setting up a station where visitors can learn about botany and how to identify native plants, along with some educational games and books to help them learn.
"There’s this wonderful book called ‘Botany in a Day,’ and I know it can be extremely intimidating, but they've really broken it down to, here are the really basic characteristics of eight families," she explained. "We’ve got some card games that you can play with so that you can learn some."
