Norwich Fire Department Saves Resident From Roof Of Burning Home

NORWICH – At 5:23 a.m., the City of Norwich Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at 50 Sheldon Street in the City of Norwich.

During the initial dispatch, the department was alerted to possible entrapment of a female occupant on the second floor.

At 5:25 a.m., Fire and ambulance crews arrived on the scene and reported smoke visible from a second-floor window.

Crews entered the building and located a working fire on the second floor of the home.

While crews immediately started extinguishing the fire, other firefighters safely removed a female occupant from a second-floor roof. There were no injuries reported on the scene.

The fire was contained within two rooms of the home, with damage sustained to only the contents of the rooms, and no apparent structural damage.

The fire was called under control by command at 5:31 a.m. There was minimal smoke and water damage throughout the second floor of the home.

The home is a single-family home with three adult occupants residing at the time of the fire.

American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist with placement of the occupants.

The City of Norwich Fire Department cause and origin team determined the cause of the fire to be related to the careless misuse of smoking products.

The City of Norwich Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the North Norwich Fire Department, City of Norwich Police Department, and the Chenango County Office of Emergency Services.
