NORWICH — The City of Norwich Common Council is poised to vote on adopting the first official City of Norwich flag at a special common council meeting scheduled for Tuesday, May 7.
Community members got involved in the design process by submitting their own designs to be considered for the city flag. The Flag Initiative Committee received 88 submissions, which they narrowed down to a final eight. A public vote was held to determine the final design.
Originally, the winning flag was to be announced on Founders Day on April 17, after adoption by the common council, but due to concerns about potential copyrights on elements of the design, the council's vote was postponed.
City of Norwich Deputy Clerk and City Historian Agnes Eaton said after reveiwing the design again, they found there are copyrights on certain elements, so it cannot be used as the city flag. Instead, they will be going with the design that received the second most votes.
