NORWICH – The New York State Office for Aging is collaborating with the pilot program Gogo Grandparent, to supply free transportation services to help elderly members continue to thrive in their communities.
"We've secured funding and are now looking for additional drivers to support and transport the elderly in our area," said Chenango County's Area Agency on Aging Director Heather Felter.
"A senior can get transportation to and from doctor's appointments, grocery stores, to pharmacies for medication, things like that," Felter said. "This program will help seniors stay independent in their home as long as possible."
She said if someone has a walker, wheelchair, dementia, Alzheimer, hearing impairment, any of those things, the driver is alerted of special care needs and will be of assistance.
Felter said at the time of sign up, an emergency contact person is requested so they will receive an alert and knows exactly when and where the transport is taking place.
"Gogo tracks that as well, along with background checks and vetting of all drivers," said Felter.
