NEW BERLIN — Renovations at Red Mill Apartments located at 5112 State Route 8, have been finalized and officials held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday, May 7, to celebrate the completion of renovation.

The Chenango County Department of Planning and Development, in partnership with Greater Opportunities for Broome and Chenango, Inc., was awarded $5.2 million in grant funding to renovate 18 permanent housing units, including nine two-bedroom and nine one-bedroom units at the Red Mill Housing Complex on Five Corners Road in New Berlin.

“The project will improve the safety and quality of life for New Yorkers while preserving long-term affordability, and complements “Southern Tier Soaring”, the region’s comprehensive strategy to revitalize communities and grow the economy,” said Governor Kathy Hochul.

Officials at the ribbon cutting included CEO of Greater Opportunities for Broome and Chenango Mark Silvanic, Chenango County Director of Planning and Development Shane Butler, New York State Homes and Community Renewal Commissioner RuthAnne Visnauskas, New Berlin Town Supervisor Wendy Rifanburg, and New Berlin Village Mayor Peter Lennon.

“These investments have been made possible thanks to funding from the New York State office of Energy Renewal, US Department of Housing Urban Development and other funding sources,” said Butler. “Without their support, the number we would have been able to help, would have been drastically reduced.”

“Quality housing is paramount for the future success of our county but it takes the effort from our community as a whole,” he said.
