CHENANGO COUNTY — School districts in Chenango County will be holding budget and Board of Education votes for the 2024-25 fiscal school year on Tuesday, May 21.
District residents are eligible to vote if they are a citizen of the United States, at least 18 years old, and have been a resident of the school district for at least 30 days prior to the vote. Some districts may require personal identification and/or proof of residency.
Afton Central School District
The Afton Central School District will hold their vote from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the main lobby, located at 29 Academy Street in Afton.
The district's proposed budget totals $19,285,569, with $12,689,854 allocated for the program component, $3,963,049 for the capital component, and the administrative component totals $2,632,666, with a proposed tax levy increase of 2 percent.
The ballot also has a proposition for the purchase of school buses. The proposition includes one 70-passenger school bus at an estimated cost of $184,000 and one eight-passenger SUV at an estimated cost of $70,000, for a total cost of $254,000. If approved, the vehicles would be paid for entirely using funds from the Bus Reserve Fund that was established in May of 2023.
The Afton Central School District has one Board of Education seat up for election. Candidates vying for the seat are Brian Hart, Nicki Andrews, and Kelly Graven-Briggs.
