SHERBURNE – The Sherburne-Earlville softball team has been playing superiorly with 10 wins now as the regular season is set to wrap up this weekend. S-E defeated Canastota 5-4 on Thursday afternoon. They also celebrated a major milestone for senior pitcher Haleigh Fisher. Fisher reached 500 strikeouts in her high school career, which also accounts for the time spent with the Unadilla Valley Storm last season. She struck out 18 batters in Thursday’s win.
S-E got on the board in the bottom of the first with a three-run inning. Fisher drove in a run on a single as Emily Lawrence hit a sacrifice fly and one run scored on an error. Fisher struck out the side in the top of the second before S-E added another run in the bottom half of the inning to go up 4-0. Fisher grounded into a fielder’s choice and Chesnee Miller was safe at the plate on the play at home.
Canastota added two runs in the top of the third to cut the lead in half 4-2 and scored one run in the fifth to be down by one. S-E answered back in the bottom of the fifth off an RBI single from Emilee Bennett.
